The contest was tough and well fought; Blackpink triumphed against a shortlist of six of the biggest celebrities and video games in the world, including Ariana Grande in Fortnite, Charli XCX in Roblox, and Justin Bieber in Wave. The MTV VMAs, which honor the year’s top music videos, will include a new category in 2022 called Best Metaverse Performance.
The event took place for over two weekends in July, and the world was captivated by its unique audiovisual features. Blackpink introduced a new tune, Ready For Love, as well as virtual performance of some of its biggest hits. A music video which was born from that collaboration has since recorded over 151 million views.
South Korean Officials Working on ‘Metaverse Industry Promotion Law’
The South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) has created a first draft of core ethical principles that will guide operations and activities in the metaverse. The government is showing concerns for the metaverse because it is planning to invest heavily in the virtual world, creating jobs and attracting companies. Local media outlets reported that the law was proposed by representative Eun-ah Huh and will focus on laying the groundwork for various policies related to the metaverse. The Metaverse Policy Review Committee will work with the Minister of Science, Technology, and Information and Communication to achieve this goal. The government budget for the metaverse-related initiatives will be 195.4 billion won.
The priorities that have been laid out are intact self-identity, safe enjoyment, and sustainable prosperity. To support these priorities, the MSIT highlighted the core values of authenticity, reciprocity, autonomy, data protection, fairness, respect for privacy, responsibility, and inclusion as being paramount. It hopes that these will act as guiding principles to prevent abuse, harassment, and bullying. South Korea is in the midst of creating a lot of regulations on crypto such as taxation and a review of cryptocurrency-related bills.
Eminem, Snoop Dogg’s BAYC Avatars Come Alive In VMA Performance
Popular rappers Eminem and Snoop Dogg launched their personified Bored Ape Yacht Club-style avatars in a metaverse performance at the MTV Video Music Awards. They go by the names of BAYC-Eminem and BAYC-Snoop. They were featured in the Rap For Otherside as characters performing their “From the D 2 the LBC” track on the Otherside metaverse. The track’s original music video, which dropped earlier in June, also features BAYC characters. In the act, the rapper duo transform into their BAYC avatars and perform a version of the track. Among other things, the performance was meant to promote the Otherside metaverse, which is the latest Web3 initiative by BAYC’s parent company Yuga Labs and blockchain gaming VC company Animoca Brands.
Both rappers, Eminem and Snoop Dogg, have been significantly involved with NFTs and other Web3 elements. However, this is their first-ever metaverse performance. Both the stars had purchased BAYC NFTs earlier this year, with Snoop being more actively involved. He holds LAND and NFTs in The Sandbox metaverse, another subsidiary of Animoca Brands. He has also acquired Death Row Records to adapt it for the metaverse. Earlier this year, he partnered with Crypto.com to launch his own NFT collection, “A Journey with the Dogg.” More recently, he entered into another partnership, this time for The Sandbox for another NFT project, “Snoop Dogg Party Pass.” Eminem, on the other hand, has purchased several NFTs, of which the “GeeGazza” NFT from the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection is the most noteworthy. He bought this NFT earlier this year for 123.45 ETH, which was worth around $450,000 at the time. His own NFT collection was launched in April 2022 on Nifty Gateway, featuring high-quality animations with an original beat by the iconic rapper himself.
